Car ‘driven into crowd’ fighting on Brighton seafront

Three people have been hurt after a car was reportedly driven into a group fighting with weapons on Marine Parade this morning.

Police were called to a report of a large group of people fighting with weapons in Marine Parade, Brighton, at 5.20am on Sunday (1 December).

As officers were responding, it was reported that some of the group had got into a vehicle which then struck three men involved in the fight.

They were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with injuries, two with serious head injuries.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and is in custody. The vehicle was later found abandoned.

Detective Inspector Chris Thompson said: “This is a fast moving investigation and we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident or has any information about it to come forward.

“Marine Parade is currently closed between the pier roundabout and Camelford Street while we carry out enquiries and I would like to thank the public for their patience.”

The incident – the third at which a car has reportedly been driven at people in the city centre in recent weeks – is not terror-related.

In the first incident, a car was driving at speed at pedestrians outside the Ship Hotel in Kings Road on Sunday, November 10.

Then the following day, Monday, November 11, a car was seen doing a u-turn then driving at two people on the pavement at the Old Steine, hitting one before driving off.

After the first incident, two men from Croydon and Sutton were arrested on suspicion of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm aggravated vehicle taking, assault, drunk driving, driving without a licence and failing to stop after a road accident. They were subsequently released under investigation.

If you can help with the investigation into this morning’s incident, please report online or ring 101 quoting Operation Danebridge.

Brighton has always been known for drugs and crime and this is just another example of what happens in a town when not enough police are employed. The council saves money in the wrong places and wastes it on others.

The Policing precept on the council bill goes to… the Police!

Government CUTS to Brighton & Hove Council have made it the second most cut city in the South East region, 22% since 2010 under Tory and Coalition governments, FACT not fiction,

“The change per head in Brighton is minus £490, whereas the national average is minus £287. ”

It is Tory austerity choices which have resulted in poor serivce, don’t blame the council and ignore the huge Tory elephant in the room.
