Mayor backs low-cost counselling charity

Mayor backs low-cost counselling charity

The new mayor took the plunge in support of a charity that provides low-cost counselling in one of her last official duties as deputy mayor.

Councillor Amanda Grimshaw praised As You Are and took to the water at the Sea Lanes swimming pool on the Kemp Town seafront.

The charity’s supporters between them aimed to swim the same distance as a cross-Channel swim – 20 miles or 32km – in just three hours.

And they were aiming to raise £5,000 – a sum that they have exceeded. They are still accepting donations. To give, click here.

Councillor Grimshaw said: “A huge thank you to every single person who has supported As You Are – and an even bigger shout out to all of you taking the plunge and swimming today. Your commitment, energy and generosity mean so much.

“Today’s event isn’t just about taking on a challenge – it’s about raising vital funds to help As You Are continue providing low-cost counselling and psychological support to our community here in Sussex.

“The need for accessible mental health support has never been greater and, thanks to your incredible efforts, they can continue offering help to those who might not otherwise have been able to access it.

“This event is also a fantastic opportunity to spread awareness about mental health – and to start conversations about just how important exercise and self-care are to our overall wellbeing.

“As You Are believe that counselling and positive mental health support should be available to everyone who needs it.

“That’s why they are committed to keeping services affordable, accessible and open to all in our community.

Councillor Amanda Grimshaw

“I also want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible team of volunteer counsellors. They are truly the heart of the organisation.

“In these challenging times, with the ‘cost of living crisis’ touching so many lives, their willingness to give up their time to support others is nothing short of extraordinary – I know we are all deeply grateful for everything they do.

“Thank you again for being here, for swimming, for supporting and for standing with us. Together, we are making a real difference.”
