More than 150 assaults on emergency workers in Sussex

A woman was reported to have been raped in the centre of Brighton late this morning.

Sussex Police said that a 45-year-old man had been arrested and remained in custody.

The force said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of the rape of a woman in Brighton.

“Members of the public reported the incident in Manchester Street to us at about 11am today (Saturday 7 June).

“The victim, a woman in her twenties, cannot be identified for legal reasons and is receiving support from specially trained officers.

“Detectives are investigating and are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or anyone with relevant footage to come forward if they have not already done so.

“A 45-year-old man was arrested and remains in custody at this time.”

Sussex Police also said: “A member of the public reported the incident in Manchester Street, Brighton, at about 11am on Saturday 7 June.

“Officers attended the scene, and a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody at this time.”

Detective Inspector Kirstie Neal said: “Detectives are investigating this incident, and we are appealing for all witnesses and anyone with information who has not already come forward to do so.

“Anyone in the area with relevant CCTV, mobile phone, doorbell or dashcam footage is also asked to come forward.

“It took place in a busy area just off St James’s Street and there will be an increased police presence in the area while this matter is investigated.”

So sad, the poor victim will suffer the rest of her life but the rapist will get a smart arsed lawyer trying to get the lowest possible sentence for it. Rape should carry a life sentence.

Another filthy, inadequate apology for a man. The crime of rape should carry a life sentence.

Member of Public reported it at 11am
So the woman in her Early 20’s was Raped in Broad Daylight-that’s absolutely outrageous ( shockingly happens randomly at 4-5am) but this hour is even worse-he got B*****ks doing that hasn’t he-that part of Town must of been getting Busy.
Glad The Woman is getting support and he been Arrested-he better be going to Court, to many never get there.

Before anyone makes assumptions from newspaper “facts” as none of the witnesses would be allowed to speak to the press during an ongoing investigation, the people making assumptions should first wait to hear the actual facts. Until then it is all conjecture.

What this person allegedly did would be beyond disgusting if found guilty. My thoughts however, are with the woman, and the police, working tirelessly no doubt, to investigate crimes such as these.

Did the incident happen at 11am or was it reported at 11am? Obviously it should never have happened, but this seems unclear in the wording if they are wanting information from possible bystanders?

If you saw ANYTHING suspicious down that road then you should be reporting it. Time is irrelevant at this point until more facts come out.

Not for a number of years, no. They’re based in the offices above Costa on Bond St these days, sadly they have so few staff they have no need for a proper newspaper office setup, just a couple of desks with an internet connection.

St James street area is so crime riddled it needs permanent police presence. Nothing else will work. CCTV doesn’t work and many of people in that area are out of control.

I don’t understand such hate-filled comments when no one actually knows the facts.
Wait until the process finishes before making judgments – above usernames should read ‘thick idiot1 – thick idiot2 – thick idiot 3’ etc

Alcohol is involved in the case of both parties.

So what if the victim had taken alcohol, what has that got to do with anything?
