Plans to widen pavements, plant trees and remove parking from a city centre street blighted by antisocial behaviour have been unveiled by the council.
Elder Place, Providence Place and St Peter’s Place, which run parallel to the west of London Road, are currently strewn with graffiti, drug dealing and worse.
Now, Brighton and Hove City Council is planning to use money from developers secured through planning agreements to rework the roads to make them more welcoming.
As well as wider pavements, new cycle lanes would be installed, as well as more crossing points, loading bays and public art.
Part of the stretch would also be made one-way for motorised traffic, while space would be made in Providence Place Gardens for a coffee van and children’s play equipment.
Jacob Allen, cabinet member for public realm, said: “The Elder Place corridor is an area of the city that we know needs improvement.
“It’s unwelcoming, poorly lit and attracts graffiti tagging and anti-social behaviour.
“We want to turn it into an area the local community can enjoy with accessible streets, green spaces and areas for the community to enjoy.
“This is a great chance for residents and businesses to give us their ideas, feedback and tell us how they think the area could be improved so that’s its more welcoming and vibrant.
A consultation was launched online this week here, and people can have their say on the plans until it closes on Tuesday, 5 August.

Oh yeah, that place looks really ghetto as it stands at the moment. It gives the feeling of a dangerous area.
Odd. I use it every day. I’ve never felt it to be dangerous or threatening. It’s unkempt, but not dangerous.
It wont eliminate, graffiti, need a total ban on sale of aerosol paint to public , it wont deter drug dealing , just make the area more comfortable for street dealers , London Rd area is becoming a no go area in places because of crime and violence , only solution is more police patrols or private security firms

The area is a dump, an eyesore in fact and badly needs upgrading.
If you’ve used this city centre area over the decades you’ll know it as an industrial alley, once housing car service garages and tyre repair shops. Plus it used to be the delivery road for the back of London Road shops – and still is for some.
It hasn’t been a traffic thoroughfare for some years, so making the road one way is probably no real loss.
The change here is about the new high rise flats being crammed into the area, and the increased footfall from owners and rental tenants should already improve the area, especially at night after the London Road and North Laine shops are closed.
This is obviously the right way to spend the money the council has gleaned from planning gains – from the developers profiting these local flats. And London road businesses should also benefit from the increase footfall.
However, the drug dealing issues may remain, and they will simply move elsewhere, but closeby. It seems there are a lot of addicts native to this area, for what ever reason.
Aye, there’s a lot of high risk supported accomodations nearby which naturally attracts a lot of drug seeking behaviour.
They will just finish it in time for the demolition of New England House. Typical response displaying the flagrant disregard for common sense that BHCC has for conserving funds.
Place is blighted with nitties..as is most of central Brighton
Looks nice, the area feels like it’s in a bit of disrepair at the moment so the greenery and better pedestrian access will be welcome.
Lots of cyclists use this route as its part of the cycle network and is safer than London Road and quieter.
If they pay local graffiti artists who are talented and respected in the graffiti community to paint great public art here, will that prevent the rest tagging over it as has been done over some existing murals on the street?
