A man suffered serious injuries when he jumped from a first-floor window after burglars broke into a cannabis factory over a Tesco store in Hove.
Three people emerged from the flat and bundled the man into a car before taking him to hospital, Sussex Police said.
His condition is not known at this stage but he is believed to have suffered a compound fracture of the leg or ankle.
Blood left at the scene was spotted by a shop manager who checked security camera footage which showed the man plummet to the ground.
The police were called. It was unclear initially whether the man had jumped or was pushed or thrown out of the window.
Other security camera footage showed a group of men entering the ground-floor door to the flat and police were unsure at first whether they were dealing with a kidnap.
Today (Tuesday 6 January), Sussex police said: “Officers were called on Monday 5 January, at around 10am, following concerns raised at a property above a shop in West Way, Hove.
“Inquiries led to the discovery of a cannabis cultivation inside a flat above the store which has since been secured and made safe.
“Further inquiries, including a review of CCTV footage, identified a man jumping from a window in the early hours of Sunday 4 January.
“A number of inquiries were carried out as part of the investigation and officers can confirm that the man who jumped was taken to hospital by a friend and is now receiving treatment for serious injuries.
“It is believed he jumped from the window while a burglary was taking place.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing and officers are continuing to gather evidence to establish the full sequence of events.
“No arrests have been made at this stage.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 257 of 05/01.”
