People living in tower blocks have asked for action to be taken to stop their parcels being stolen.
Residents of blocks at the top end of Whitehawk have regularly raised concerns about being targeted by parcel thieves when deliveries are left in communal areas rather than taken to their doors.
In a written question submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council’s housing management panel for east Brighton, concerns were raised that nothing was happening to prevent the thefts.
Sussex Police and the council have been informed about the issue which has been raised before at panel meetings where residents, councillors and housing officials meet to discuss issues and share information.
Housing customer services manager Robert Keelan said: “The council is not currently planning to instal parcel lockers as this would require significant infrastructure and external provider involvement.
“Parcels left in communal areas such as lobbies and hallways are vulnerable to theft, particularly where unauthorised access occurs.”
To reduce risk, he advised people to leave delivery instructions to not leave parcels in communal areas and to use alternative delivery options such as parcel lockers, shops or post offices.
Another suggestion was to use doorbell cameras, subject to council approval.

Just about all parcels can be sent to your local Post Office then collect it from there, Amazon obviously have their own boxes but it’s a definite way of recieving your parcels.
Very true
Also why should the council put lockers etc in when it’s getting knocked down soon so why spend when not need.
Drivers should leave it at the local shop in 1 of those blocks-and normally it Tenants that don’t answer there doors that leave parcels at there own risk surely.
But who’s getting in to take them cos isn’t that on CCTV in any blocks as that couple were caught living in a block in the Stairwell.
Some community spaces also happy to take in a few parcels; could be worth checking with North Whitehawk Community Association and seeing if that is something they are able to support with.
And maybe EDB might be able to provide funding for some improvements to facilitate safe delivery too!
Awful this is happening but please remember the sender is responsible for you item until it is safely delivered. If it’s left somewhere they are responsible until you receive the item.
Don’t bother with the delivery company as you don’t have a contract with them. Never name a “safe place” unless it’s safe as then it’s your responsibility if it goes missing.
I don’t think the council is responsible for keeping items not delivered to a door – but on some cases there might actually be a commercial opportunity for lockers from the likes of Amazon – although with local shops accepting as others have said, if you are not in then making that your default is probably best.
