Sun set to shine for Brighton Children's Parade

The sun is due to shine down on the Brighton Children’s Parade tomorrow, which marks the beginning of the Brighton Festival.

The BBC predicts sunny spells and temperatures of about 10C for the parade, which kicks off at 8.30am in Sydney Street, and ends in Madeira Drive at about 1.30pm.

However, Sunday is set for showers – with sunny spells forecast to return on Bank Holiday Monday.

This year’s parade, which is now 25 years old, has the theme The Planet. Producers Same Sky say: “Journey through the polar, temperate, tropical and desert regions with 4,000 participants from 70 schools and community groups parading through the city’s streets.

“Look out for the ‘Youth Voice’ team of roving reporters and the ‘DetermiNation’ puppet that inspires young people to voice their opinions about the environmental issues facing our planet.

A rolling system of road closures will operate in the city centre, with streets re-opening after the parade has passed through.

The first streets affected are Pelham Street, Pelham Square, Trafalgar Street (between St George’s Place and Whitecross Street), Sydney Street, Gloucester Street (between Sydney Street and Gloucester Road), Gloucester Road (between Sydney Street and Cheltenham Place) and Kensington Street where the children will gather from 8.30am.

Other roads which will be affected as the parade moves off from Kensington Street at 10.30am are North Road (between Kensington Street and Jubilee Street), Jubilee Street, Church Street (between Marlborough Place and Gardner Street), New Road, North Street (between Bond Street and Castle Square), Castle Square, East Street and Grand Junction Road (between Kings Road and Pool Valley). All roads should be reopened by 1.30pm.

There will also be changes to bus services. All buses from London Road, Lewes Road, Edward Street and the Coast Road in the east will turn in Old Steine between 10.30am and 12.45pm.

All buses from Western Road in the west will turn at Churchill Square using Montpelier Road, Upper North Street and Regent Hill to the HMV stop.

There will also be alterations to services 6, 7, 37B, 78, 79, 56, 77 and 81 – click here for details.
