Brighton club for sale weeks after fight death

A Brighton night club has been put up for sale less than a fortnight after it was forced to close by the police and the council.

The Ocean Rooms, in Morley Street, Brighton, formerly the Kings Club, is being offered for £750,000 after a man died outside in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Brighton and Hove City Council suspended the club’s licence until Friday 5 February after an application by Sussex Police.

The club has since been advertised for sale by estate agent Austin Gray and is due to be sold at auction on Friday 5 March.

The advert, for the freehold, says that site could be used for a night club or as a development opportunity.

The neighbouring derelict fruit and veg market is due to be redeveloped as part of a £100 million scheme.

The licence was suspended at an emergency licensing panel meeting on Friday 15 January, chaired by Councillor Lynda Hyde.

She said: “The Ocean Rooms have shown a clear disregard for the licensing objectives of public safety, the protection of children from harm and the prevention of crime and disorder.

“The panel believes that the suspension of the licence is necessary in the interests of public safety and for the prevention of further crime and disorder.”

According to the council, the decision was taken because of concerns about violent crime and lack of co-operation with the police.

Cllr Hyde said: “I’m pleased with the decision as public safety must be our top priority. We have serious concerns about the management of the club and its association with serious crime.”

Police told the panel that incidents of assault at the premises had not been reported.

On New Year’s Day, Ricky Brown, 25, of Arnold Street, Brighton, suffered serious head wounds in a fight outside the club. He died four days later.

Chancey Cummings, 25, of no fixed address, has been charged in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Friday 26 March.

Owner Ben Gill could not be reached for a comment last night.
