Brighton Carnival cancelled after failing to plug £60k funding gap

The Brighton Carnival has been scrapped after an appeal  for funds raised just £300 of the £60,000 it needed to put on th event, The Argus reports today.

The organisers launched a fundraising drive in March after the Arts Council England said it could not provide a grant this year.

Caroline Fletcher, chair of BCA, said: “Everybody is gutted about it. We got to the point where, although we had a lot of promises for money, we did not have enough confirmed funds.”

But she added she was hopeful the event would bounce back next year, and a scaled down event will take place at the White Night festival in October.
