Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk leads seafront summer shows

Three big new events have been added to an already busy summer calendar in Brighton and Hove.

They include an outdoor show by US skateboard legend Tony Hawk, a rugby 7s festival and a weekend of live music on the seafront headlined by platinum-selling artist Newton Faulkner.

The late additions complement several other new events secured by the council this summer.  They include the Wild Planet photographic exhibition on the seafront, expected to be seen by 100,000 people and the Brighton marathon seen by 80,000.

Newton Faulkner is booked to appear in a charity event called @Sunset on Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31.  Taking place next to the West Pier, the show will accommodate some 4,000 people, with tickets priced around £30.  It will be filmed for screening on Channel 5.

Tens of thousands are expected to attend a celebration of 75 years of Brighton and Hove Buses, on Madeira Drive on June 13.

Skateboard star Tony Hawk will perform the only UK show of a European tour in Brighton on Wednesday, July 21, next to the West Pier.  The show includes live music from Biffy Clyro plus demonstrations from other pro skaters in a specially-built half-pipe.  It is possible tickets will be free, but this is not confirmed.

Council bosses are keen to stress the volume of events taking place in the city this summer, lined up to help boost tourism.  Some 15 new events are scheduled.

Cabinet councillor for tourism David Smith said:  “Events come and go.  But we’ve more than replaced any we’ve lost.  The latest additions are really good quality events, helping us offer a programme appealing to a wide range of tastes and ages.  And there will be more to come.”

An international rugby 7s event is now scheduled for July 23-25 at Waterhall, just north of Brighton.  It will have an elite competition of 16 premiership-standard teams plus contests for amateurs and women.  A campsite will be set up to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators and players.

Regular concerts will be staged on the restored seafront bandstand.  Freerange near St Peter’s Church effectively replaces the temporary Spiegeltent venue absent from this year’s Brighton Festival.

Also new is a free community show as part of the No Fit State Circus on the Level this week, up to May 23.  All-comers are invited to attend and perform.

Party on the Green in Coldean is a new community event on May 22.

With regards to the new community event “party on the green” that took place on the 22nd of may 2010.

Over 200 people enjoyed there day & evening event, with whole host of great activities & artists, including egg & spoon race, bouncy castle, karaoke, kids games & live DJ’s.

This was the start of the new community event.

Plans for 2011 are in place.

    Kind Regards
    Mark Wall

Hi my son loves Tony Hawk he would love to see him skate but not all the bands – will this only be in the evening at 7.30pm? as £50.70 is a bit steep for 3 of us to watch him for an hour!!!!
