The Green Party won a decisive victory in the St Peter’s and North Laine by-election last night.

Despite accusations of running a low-profile campaign, Lizzie Deane secured more than twice as many votes as anyone else, winning 56.8% of the vote. However, fewer than one in four people voted, with turnout at just 24%.

The full results are as follows:

  • Lizzie Deane (Green) 1,816
  • Tom French (Labour)  880
  • Rob Buckwell (Conservative) 365
  • Trefor Hunter (Lib Dem) 103
  • Gerald O’Brien (Independent) 32
  • The by-election was prompted by Green councillor Keith Taylor taking up the seat in the European Parliament vacated by party leader Caroline Lucas, who is now the Brighton and Pavilion MP.

The Green Party and Labour both have 13 seats on the council, the Conservative Party 25 and the Liberal Democrats two.

Re the turnout – None of the six people in my flat block got a polling card – wonder how many more? Once again some people lost their right to vote!
