Thousands expected in Brighton and Hove for White Night festival

More than 60 events are due to take place in Brighton tonight as the White Night festival marks the end of British Summer Time and the clocks go back.

The programme includes indoor and outdoor events from a midnight half marathon to “Knit Lit” – a chance to learn or brush up knitting skills.

A light show will illuminate the West Pier and there will be music at the Birdcage Bandstand on the seafront.

A host of venues are staying open late for one-off events – or for much-needed coffee or cocktails – as the festival is expected to draw crowds of up to 30,000 people.

The festival is now in its third year and includes storytelling in the town’s oldest churchyard, life drawing sessions, music recorded in Brighton’s Victorian sewers and themed tours.

White Night Brighton and Hove is led by Brighton and Hove Arts Commission in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council.

The organisers said: “This year Brighton and Hove’s artists, venues, curators and programmers shine a light on the city and the psyche inviting you to take part in an enlightening night of art, music, digital art, spoken word and performance, and all for free.

“This year there is even more to do and see right up until dawn.

“Every event has been created especially for the festival and there are more new commissions and world premieres, all revolving around Illumination: light, enlightenment, learning and epiphany.

“White Night is about innovation and highlighting the talent of the city’s artists and

Programmers: the festivals, venues and creative people that make Brighton and Hove

such a cool city to live, work, visit and play in.

“So mark the end of British Summer Time in style and use your extra hour wisely by

joining in the city’s unique all night cultural festival.”
