More than 7,500 pensioners in Brighton and Hove will miss out on £25 a week in cold weather payments simply because they are not claiming what they are entitled to.
The Liberal Democrats have calculated in Hove this is estimated to be 2,690 OAPs in the Hove constituency, 1,925 in Brighton Pavilion and 2,945 in Brighton Kemptown are failing to make the claim.
Revealing the figures on his blog, Lib Dem councillor Paul Elgood said: “Brighton and Hove is freezing at the moment and it is a scandal that pensioners on the breadline are missing out on these payments.
“A cold weather payment could literally make the difference for a pensioner at this time. Heating their homes is critical during these harsh winter conditions.”
He blamed the complicated system put in place by Labour.
