Hollingdean youngsters to be shown how new skate park will look

The final design for the revamped skateboard park in Hollingdean will be shown to youngsters and campaigners in the area next Monday (17 January).

Hollingdean Development Trust is hosting an exhibition at the community centre in Thompson Road from 3pm to 6pm.

Trustees and skateboarders who have been involved in the project will show where the skate park will be in Hollingdean Park and set out the timetable for the building work.

This will include the date for work to start, how long the skate park will take to build and when it will be open for skateboarders to use.

The revamped skate park is costing £75,000 with most of the money coming from a lottery grant through an organisation called Community Spaces.

Local teenagers raised £14,800 by putting their case to other young people from the Youth Capital Fund last year.

They were helped by community development worker Liz Lee who has kept a record of the youngsters’ progress on the Hollingdean News Online website.

The old skate park, with just three ramps and away from the main park, has long been regarded as being in a poor location. It has also suffered from vandalism.

Although it is popular with local youths, many of them head off to Hove Lagoon and Shoreham to go skateboarding at the moment.

The new, more robust, skate park will be nearer Brentwood Road and could be opened during the Whitsun half-term holiday in early June.
