Hove residents to be given mobile speed cameras to catch speeding drivers

Hove residents are being offered the chance to catch drivers speeding through their streets.

The Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team are looking for volunteers to set up and operate community speed watch groups.

Members of the group are given speed detection devices to set up speed watch sessions. Drivers caught speeding can then be sent out warning letters.

Information provided by volunteers goes onto a database but is not used for individual enforcement, although the police will be able to use it to target persistent speeders.

Registration numbers, speeds and times will be stored, but only police will be able to access this information.

PC Jez Holgate said: “Schemes are already successfully up and running in other areas of Sussex and our current thinking is that groups in Hove would be ward-specific, so there could for example be a Wish group and a Westbourne group.

“These groups could be deployed anywhere in Hove where concerns have been raised. Each group needs a co-ordinator and a minimum of four volunteers to get started.”

A number of residents have already expressed an interest in setting up a group, through the Kingsway And West Hove Residents’ Association who can be contacted at kawhra@gmail.com, or by phone on 01273 419404

If you know of any other areas in West Hove which need monitoring, or if you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch.either via the Community Speed Watch website or by contacting PC Holgate by email at jeremy.holgate@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

Great, taking the street back for the community! Is there such a group in Brighton? I would be up for volunteering and there would be plenty more up for this round my way.

So now it is down to the residents to police our ROADS ! As usual another CRAZY idea from the GREENS , namely our 20mph limits and now we have resident set against resident . I , along with many of my pals are TOTALLY at a loss to the thinking behind these MAD traffic schemes and 20mph limits .
WE waste MORE petrol waiting at red lights only to progress 100m to another set . CARBON output is up AND pollution . Journey times are UP .
Either BAN traffic COMPLETELY so we all use bikes and buses ( very European ! could we cope ?)
    OR
30mph limits , compulsory GREEN CROSS CODE to all children over THREE , YEARLY ( to teach that ROADS are FOR CARS not people ) AND remove traffic lights .

A major step forward in traffic free cities OR a free flowing , greener ( small g ) so a TWO mile journey takes 6 minutes NOT half a bloody hour !

Car driver , cyclist , motorbiker , walker and occasionally crawling on all fours back from the pub , with luv , lemme

I agree with Ian, this is all getting bloody stupid, money greed by the government, it will all end up in these volunteers being named and shamed and probably having to move away, teach the kids to stay off the roads, I for one am not letting go of my car, for years its been safe at 30 mph, every one has got use to that, so the greedy government drop it to catch people out, more money in their pockets, a revolution is needed, keep pushing us drivers, we’ll soon show you, watch your backs volunteers, you’ll be hated as much as traffic wardens.

Have to tell you all . . . got BUSTED by one of the ” residents ” a few weeks back informing me that my ” vehicle was seen to drive at excess speed of the road limit ” !!!! SEEN ? pardon ? quote ” I was sat in the park the other day when I saw a starling fly past at 27 mph . My eyes are very accurate ” he said as he finished his crisps ….

    There has , apparently , been a ” complaint ” .

” However , a report to OPERATION CRACKDOWN does NOT constitute a driving offence ” . as a result , my attention has been drawn to the ” consequence of anti-social or dangerous driving . ”

” Any one can use the operation crackdown website to report drivers who put other people’s lives at risk ”

Well , I appreciate such a letter MORE than THREE point on my licence and a £60 fine . What a civilised way to deal with ALLEGEDLY ( ahem ) speeding in the 20mph zone 🙂

OOOH ! I just seen the MAYOR’s car doing 26 mph in a 20 zone . MY EYES are accurate too . Gotta hit the OPERATION CRACKDOWN website , RAT the driver out !

And my neighbour . AND ALL the taxi drivers . AND I was doing 29 on my bicycle the other day . And the buses . AND the police cars . HEY ! NO-ONE drives at 20 mph ( which is the maximum , officer ) .

SHAME everyone drives at 24 mph whilst leaving town up the London Road and out to Patcham . By this time I am so happy to be leaving our RUBBISH roads system (designed by a cyclist , I am ashamed to state ) , that if I am on the MOTORBIKE , I’d be doing 63 ( KPH in the 40 at Patcham , officer ) with the wind in my hair ( bald ) , a smile on my face ( shiny dentures ) and my front wheel in the air !!!!

    FREEDOM !

    liberte , equalite , fraternite , and luv , Lemme x

I’m seeing more 20mph signs going up, and i for one hate them, more traffic, more fines, money in their pockets, another money grabbing scheme by the governments and councils, we have had years driving with the old speed limits, and because we have all got use to them, with not many speeding fines issued, they drop the speed and we all start again, what happens when we all drive at 20, and no fines i years to come? will you drop it to 10mph, your all a bunch of money grabbing @%$£* holes, if I see any volunteers speed checking, they’ll find a speeding brick through their window, it’s all getting out of hand, before long we’ll all be in long queue’s waiting for a bus that will speed you to work, late. I for one want the green party out, they have already taken our roads with bicycle lanes, and bikes still use the roads. people will still walk out in front of traffic, cars will still knock down people, even at 20mph, teach them the green cross code, problem solved, bloody nanny state, if i get knocked down, chances are I’m in the wrong, but because i respect the road as a pedestrian, I’m here writing this, get some balls Britain.

Now i have heard it all, the council have an OPERATION CRACKDOWN website, where we all report on each other, doing their dirty work, that will make us no better than your bastard traffic wardens, turning us all on each other, why not be done with it and start handing out guns why don’t you,
it’s making me angry, we won’t be able to do anything before you know it, another side to big brother watching you, get your neighbors to do it for them. i can see where this is going, and it doesn’t look pretty.

I know where your coming from “No Brainer” i think we should all stand up to the government, revolution, shut them down, money grabbing bastards, their not in it for the safety of any of us, just another reason to make more cash, take out parts of our roads for cycle lanes, and the cyclists don’t use them, so we have to sit in single lane traffic every morning, sneaky cops hiding with their speed guns, something needs to be done, before you know it we’ll all be pushed underground and out of the way, as in that Arnie Movie, and those who can afford it stay on top, build them a huge tower so they can look down on us all, a sniper is what we need, one by one shut them down, that’s my thought on it anyway.
