Three more city drivers have been charged as part of Sussex Police’s summer crackdown on drink and drug driving.

John Barker, 41, was arrested at 6.45pm on Monday 1 June after he went through a red light in Holland Road, Hove.

Barker, of Adelaide Crescent, Hove, was charged with drink-driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition. He was released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 16 June.

Trevor Saunders, 30, was arrested at 8am on 4 June after he was stopped because he was driving erratically in Lewes Road, Brighton.

Saunders, of Eaton Place, Brighton, was charged with drink-driving. He was released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 25 June.

John Darke, 50, was arrested at 2.40pm on 4 June in Lewes Road, Brighton, after officers saw him leaving a pub, getting into a car and driving off.

Darke, of Preston Road, Brighton, was charged with drink-driving and released on bail to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 4 June.
A total of 18 people have so far been charged with offences as part of Sussex Police’s summer crackdown on drink and drug-driving across the county.

As part of Operation Dragonfly, road policing unit officers are on dedicated patrols looking for offenders.

Teams are responding to tip-offs from members of the public who see someone they know has been drinking getting into a car to drive.

Stop checks are also being set up at locations across Sussex and Surrey, in particular at locations where there is intelligence that there has been a history of drink-driving.

In previous campaigns, the forces have named all those charged with drink or drug-driving offences that were committed during the month-long crackdown.

In addition, this year the forces will be releasing footage of convicted offenders that shows the state they were in when they got behind the wheel – and how important it is that they are banned from the roads before they hurt anyone.

People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk.

You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
