A BMW driver has admitted dangerous driving after crashing following a brief police pursuit and then running across the A27 to escape officers.
Terry Bridgewater, 47, an office manager, of Saunders Hill, Brighton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 5 January and admitted the charge.
The court heard Bridgewater was the driver of a BMW car which sped off after a police vehicle had cause to try to stop it on the westbound carriageway of the A27 on Saturday 3 January.
It moved in and out of the queuing traffic and crashed with a Range Rover vehicle just before 6pm.
Bridgewater then left the vehicle and ran off across the carriageway, the court was told.
He was later located and arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to custody.
Bridgewater was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 2 February for sentencing.

Idiots like this need to be banned from driving for life! Yeh .. I know they’ll probably still drive but at least if they get caught heavier sentences keeps them inside longer and off our streets and away from our kids!!!!!
What a shame that uninformed idiots like you are so quick to post their nasty little comments based on a piece of second rate journalism posted on a second rate website. Of course dangerous driving is never acceotable but you know nothing about this incident, or that sometimes good people do stupid and reckless things that are completely out of character. There is a back story to this incident. So you carry on “Chips” ( great name by the way) I”m sure your little post made you feel really important.
Tell us the back story then so that we may be better informed
Don’t take it personally Vinegar. He was driving dangerously and did a runner from the police .. no matter what problems or background story there is, he shouldn’t be on the roads. There’s nothing uninformed or nasty about this. Chill!
No. Because nobody, including you probably, gives a monkeys about this person’s story, you simply want to know because people are inherently nosey. Nobody knows what this person’s life was like leading up to this incident. All I will say is that he would never ever, and has never driven dangerously, and would certainly never endanger others. Sometimes things are not as straightforward as they seem. I’m not commenting further.
So because of one person’s bad decisions, wider society was placed at risk and harm was done. To compound this, they then try to evade responsibility causing further hazard and mayhem. If I have trauma in life, I try not to visit it on others. I certainly don’t get into a vehicle whilst obviously not in a fit state to control it. Whatever the mitigation promulgated, the judge deemed it such dangerous behaviour to warrant remanding them in custody prior to sentence.
Hmm, his mental state could very well have been impaired; those actions could be the result of something like early-onset dementia. If it is something like that, it will be seen publicly in sentencing. He’s guilty of the actus reus, but the defence speaks to the mens rea.
I’d be interested in seeing the sentencing.
