Shalamar celebrate 50 years with Brighton gig

Shalamar are heading to Brighton

One of the most successful soul groups of all time, Shalamar return to the UK in 2026 to celebrate their 50th anniversary with ‘The Gold Tour’.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1976 by Soul Train creator Don Cornelius and music executive Dick Griffey, Shalamar became a defining force in late ’70s and ’80s R&B, funk and dance music.

With 18 UK Top 75 hits, 11 Top 40 singles, four Top 10 hits and over 25 million records sold worldwide, their influence on popular music and dance culture remains unmistakable.

Rising from their breakthrough with debut single & album ‘Uptown Festival’, Shalamar went on to deliver a run of era-defining hits including ‘A Night To Remember’, ‘Take That To The Bank’, ‘The Second Time Around’, ‘Make That Move, Dead Giveaway’, ‘There It Is’, ‘Friends’ and ‘Dancin’ In The Sheets’; records that continue to fill dancefloors and festival fields worldwide.

The group also played a central role in shaping modern dance culture. In the early 1980s, Jeffrey Daniel introduced body-popping to the UK and Europe, famously performing the first moonwalk on British television – a moment that helped redefine pop performance and influenced a generation of artists.

Today, Shalamar are led by Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett from the classic 1982 lineup, alongside Carolyn Griffey, who has been the group’s female lead since 2001 and is the longest-serving woman in Shalamar’s history. Backed by a powerful seven-piece live band, the group continue to headline major festivals and theatres across the world.

In recent years, Shalamar have been recognised in the UK with a stone on the Camden Music Walk of Fame and named Soul Act of the Year at the Boisdale Music Awards, underlining their lasting cultural impact and continued relevance.

The Gold Tour marks five decades of hits, innovation and performance from a group whose catalogue and stage presence remain as vital as ever. Fans can expect to see all the hits – plus songs never before performed in the UK.

Special Guest for the tour will be Gwen Dickey – The Voice of Rose Royce, famed for hits such as ‘Wishing On A Star’, ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’, ‘Car Wash’, and ‘Is It Love You’re After’.
