Brighton Festival commenced its impressive classical season this weekend with a stunning selection of music by two of our leading quartets, an afternoon of precision and passion watched by an extremely appreciative audience.

Celebrating 60 years, the Festival aims to reflect on the wonderful contributions over the years and look forward to the next generation and the music they will play.

First to perform were the Consone Quartet, who brought us Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K. 465,  Dissonance. The piece opened with a strange, unsettled introduction before resolving into bright, elegant music. The tension and charm felt between the players were evident, and we enjoyed the warmth and conversation between instruments. This UK-based ensemble specialises in Classical and early Romantic repertoire on period instruments. Formed at the Royal College of Music, they have received international recognition, including prizes at major competitions, and are known for their warm sound, stylistic insight, and collaborative approach to chamber music. We particularly enjoyed the lightness of the cello player (George Ross), which contrasted perfectly with the more frantic sections.

Next, the Chiaroscuro Quartet performed Haydn’s String Quartet in E flat major Op 20 No 1. This was lively, inventive and full of character. The opening felt bold and confident, while the slower moments were expressive and thoughtful. The piece was performed with crisp articulation and emotion, with lively exchanges between the quartet, and extreme control, particularly from the first violin (Agata Daraškaitė), who confidently managed the sweeping sections with wonderful dynamics. Playing on gut strings and with historical bows, this piece sounded authentic and vibrant.

Both quartets then united to perform as an octet with Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20, MWV R 20 on offer. This was the highlight of the concert for us, with so much interaction to watch and enjoy. Written for 8 players, it feels rich and orchestral. The music moved from driving rhythms to light, sparkling passages, especially in the quick, magical scherzo, before ending in a joyful, exhilarating rush.

Any visit to Glyndebourne enchants, but this afternoon was an extremely entertaining event with music that everyone could enjoy, regardless of their own musical understanding. The venue is perfect for this type of intimate performance, using just the front of the stage to focus and the auditorium to let the sound travel and grow. And, of course, a walk in the grounds or a splendid picnic is always a treat. This weekend, we were lucky! The sun streamed off The Downs, the lambs galloped around the fields, and the water lilies were ready to launch into bloom. With the grounds open before and after the performance, we had time to let the music sink in and just enjoy being there.

The Brighton Festival continues across May with a huge variety of musical events and performances.
