A Brighton murder victim died of a single stab wound to the heart, an inquest heard this morning.
Tio Day, 37, died in the early hours of Sunday, 26 April, after a fight at Moon’s Lodge in Regency Square.
Daniel Bassett, 26, has been charged with his murder and the attempted murder of Dylan McEwan, and is due to enter a plea at Lewes Crown Court in July. A provisional trial date of 5 October has been set.
This morning, Mr Day’s inquest was opened at Woodvale Coroners Court off Lewes Road in Brighton. Assistant coroner Joanne Andrews summarised a statement by coroners officer Vicky Foreman.
She said: “Tio Day was found with a single stab wound. He sadly died at the scene. A person has been charged with his murder.”
She added the post mortem found he had died of a stab wound to the heart.
Tio’s father Neville Day was named as an interested party, but did not attend today’s opening.
At the end of the brief hearing, Mrs Andrews said the death was unnatural and so an inquest was required – but suspended it pending the outcome of the criminal case.
