Brighton & Hove Albion can’t quite see off the Gunners

Albion were out of luck as they largely dominated possession in an entertaining goalless draw at the Amex.

Albion had first-half chances most notably one that fell to Lewis Dunk who scooped an effort over with the goal gaping.

Dan Burn also had a clear opportunity but headed over the bar from a Dunk cross.

Takehiro Tomiyasu was involved as Pierre Emrick Aubameyang got clear of Dunk and angled a shot which grazed Robert Sanchez’s left-hand post.

As Albion began to dominate possession, first Trossard then Maupay on the volley saw efforts fly well wide of Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.

As Arsenal mounted counter-attacks Thomas Party fired high and wide from 20 yards out.

Marc Cucurella was continuing to be a willing outlet for Albion and combined well with Jakub Moder although, sadly, it came to nothing

Briefly it looked like Arsenal might open the scoring as Aubameyang and Emile Smith Rowe combined, the latter placing his shot wide.

Before the half finished Trossard fired in an angled drive which Cucurella stretched for but agonisingly couldn’t meet at the far post.

Arsenal had a resurgence for a while after the restart. But after Aubameyang sprinted clear and was well tackled by Shane Duffy, only for a late offside flag to deny Arsenal a corner, it was all Albion again.

Trossard saw an effort easily collected by Ramsdale and Moder skewed horrible wide when well placed.

Albion were again dominating possession but not finding the pass that would penetrate the Gunners defence.

From Martin Odegaards endeavours Smith-Rowe found himself one on one with Sanchez, but the Albion keeper saved down to his left.

Before the end Cucurella tested Ramsdale from the edge of the area.

It was the Seagulls who had the best chance of the match, late on, as an ummarked Duffy guided a free header the wrong side of the post from about eight yards out, from a Cucurella corner.

Albion stay fifth in the Premier League for now and travel to so far winless Norwich City on Saturday 16 October.
