The centre of Brighton is likely be snarled up for days as roadworks are scheduled for key sites at the same time.
Western Road is being repaired and resurfaced in front of Churchill Square – between Regent Hill and Dyke Road in both directions.
Workmen are due to carry out the work from 7pm to 6am on Monday and Tuesday (4 and 5 October).
The road will be shut both ways and Brighton and Hove Buses is diverting its services via Montpelier Road and the Seven Dials.
But work will also be carried out at the Montpelier Road junction with Western Road from Monday.
Contractors will be repairing the westbound or south side of the road and vehicles will be barred from turning right into Montpelier Road.
Also from Monday, Southern Gas Networks is due to carry out work on the northbound carriageway of Queen’s Road opposite Queensbury House.
The southbound bus stop will be suspended for the day.
And to compound the traffic problems around town, EDF will be digging a trench in Grand Parade.
The trench is needed for a new high voltage cable as part of the new American Express building in Edward Street.
The work is scheduled to last for a week and is expected to mean buses being unable to use the bus lanes but joining the rest of the traffic in an already busy section of road.
Drivers in Woodingdean can also look forward to jams with up to four weeks of longer queues looking likely from Monday.
The crossroads by the Downs Hotel will be altered and the first phase – during October – will mean temporary traffic lights will be used.
Workmen are expected to signal traffic through the lights manually during the morning and evening rush hour.
Even minor roadworks at the crossroads in the past have caused major delays there.
Some bus journeys may start and finish in Cowley Drive with shuttle buses running if necessary.
