Roedean sells junior school site to Brighton College

Roedean School has sold its junior school site to Brighton College for an undisclosed sum.

The sale of the Eastern Road land will fund 30 bursaries to Roedean, one of Britain’s leading independent girls’ schools.

It will also mean an end to junior education at Roedean from the end of this term, with the school keen to focus on 11 to 18 year olds at its main 45-acre seafront campus.

In a statement the school said: “The sale of this site will enable Roedean to provide approximately 30 life-changing bursaries for girls in the Sussex area and beyond.

“The school will also further enhance the boarding, academic, sporting and performance facilities available within its stunning grounds.

“This will ensure that Roedean sets a new standard in pupil experience and thereby cements its reputation as one of the world’s most prominent girls’ schools.”

Roedean put the old St Mary’s Hall school land up for sale on the open market, having already sold part of the site for about £10 million.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the neighbouring Royal Sussex County Hospital, was the buyer.

It will convert its part of the site into flats for doctors and nurses while some of it will be used as offices.

The latest deal will enable Brighton College to move its nursery and pre-prep pupils about 500 yards along the road. The youngsters will then have their own dedicated site.

And older pupils will gain 17 extra classrooms and more playing space at the main Brighton College campus.

In a statement the independent boys’ and girls’ school said: “The entire college campus, originally established in 1845, will now be devoted entirely to the education of children aged 11 years and above, enabling the school to strengthen its position as the pre-eminent co-educational school in Sussex and one of the leading schools in England.

“Both schools are delighted that, through this land sale, the provision of outstanding education will continue in East Brighton.”

Worked at Roedean School 1982 to 2004 as security officer. A great school providing excellent facilities from a dedicated staff and resulting year in and year out top marks from the students. If you have a daughter and can afford the fees then Roedean is the greatest investment you can make for your childs future.
