Gypsies and travellers are facing eviction from two camps on one site in Brighton after the council asked a judge for a possession order yesterday (Friday 1 July).
The new Green administration running Brighton and Hove City Council has been criticised for its approach to unauthorised camps.
But again yesterday it said that it obtained a possession order “as part of the ongoing work to tackle unauthorised encampments in unsuitable locations”.
The order for Ladies Mile nature reserve was granted in Brighton County Court.
The council will now liaise with the sheriffs to carry out an eviction from the site.
The council said: “A group of van dwellers, with approximately 20 to 25 lived-in vehicles, and eight families of English Gypsies, with ten trailers, are encamped in this space.
“There are two separate encampments on this land. There is an encampment of English Gypsies occupying land south of the mast, and an encampment of van dwellers occupying land north of the mast.
“Joint visits, with the police, have been made, and health and welfare checks have been carried out. Health services and the Traveller Education Service have also been visiting the site.
“The council has worked very closely with the police to ensure that any anti-social behaviour has been be dealt with. The police are making high-profile visits to the site on a daily basis.”
Councillor Pete West, cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We will continue to take a firm but fair approach to travellers arriving in the city and this includes taking swift action when they park in unsuitable locations or engage in anti-social manner.
“We will always use our legal powers and resources to tackle unacceptable behaviour.”
ohh wow the traveling community are back in brighton Wild Park in Moulsecoomb i wonder if it was money issues that mean that little preventative bump hump along Wild Park in Moulsecoomb , its going to cost the council a lot more now to remove them / clear up after the travelers have gone ..
