Residents in Patcham and Portslade are being warned of further flooding if water levels continue to rise.
In Patcham basements and some parts of the railway line have already been flooded.
After checking the groundwater level today (Thursday 20 February) Brighton and Hove City Council has issued a warning of a high risk of surface level flooding if the heavy rains continue.
Areas at risk in Patcham include Old London Road, parts of Church Hill and Mill Road where they meet the A23, and the recreation ground.
This morning’s assessment measured the groundwater level in Patcham at 47.11 metres above sea level.
A groundwater level above 45 metres poses a high risk of surface level flooding.
To help divert water from the road drains, Southern Water has installed temporary pipes and pumps beside the A23.
There is also concern that flooding could affect some homes in Portslade if the water level there continues to rise.
Letters were put through the doors of all the homes in the high risk area on Friday (14 February).
Residents are advised to take the following precautions if flooding is looking likely:
- make plans to stay with friends or relatives in case you need to leave
- prepare a bag with clothing, medicines and any other essentials
- move personal or sentimental items to safety
- move family, pets and valuables to a safe place
- put any flood protection equipment in place
- switch off water, gas and electricity at the mains before water enters the house
- take home insurance documents with you
Some houses in Patcham that don’t have basements and which might be affected by water running off roads have been given sandbags.
Sandbags are not normally used for heavy rainfall and surface flooding as they can stop water draining away if placed wrongly.
An information point for Patcham residents has been set up at The Black Lion, London Road, Patcham on weekdays from 10am to 2pm and weekends 10am to 1pm.
Brighton and Hove City Council has a flood helpline number 07825 387380 available every day from 10am to 4pm.
Outside of these times the council’s environment team out of office hours number 01273 292229 can be used.
Residents can also call 01273 296666 to hear a recorded message with details of the current status.
Further information and advice on what to do before or during a flood is available on the Environment Agency website or by calling the Floodline on 0845 988 1188 or 0345 988 1188.
The Environment Agency also has a free flood alert programme to receive flood warnings by phone, text or email.

If The Argus has printed the same as us about the pipes, it’s because we are both working from the same information, which came from Brighton and Hove City Council. Obviously if you believe this to be incorrect, I would welcome further details.

Mr Smith, I queried gully sucking recently. Drain clearing is done in rotation, by ward, each ward about every 18 months I believe. There is a spot on the council website with the information. It is essential work that should be done a couple of times a year really, especially in flood-prone areas.
One more service the council does that needs paying for out of council tax and local government grant from London (cut by 40% under the Coalition).

Thanks Valerie Paynter i am very well aware of the cleaning schedule set out by brighton and Hove ” knowing that when it was in control of southern water it was on a more frequent basis ” its now costing about £220 per drain hole on a call out agains for another local counsel who owns the street gully cleaning equipment just £10 per pot
you might have noticed the overflowing drains in the area of Audrey close and Grangeways the flood prevention measures put in place in Audry close keep being removed . this is greatly increasing the flow in to old London road of ” greatly watered down sewerage ” local residents need to be aware that the pumps are pumping at almost maximum flow the surplus water from waterhall in to the drainage network watering down greatly the sewage but its still clearly present along the london road near the junction of ringside avenue .. The argus is doing a great job in keeping the readers informed of developments and one that must be of great great concern is the proposed expansion of the traveller transit site. I am sure your very much aware that the water in our taps comes directly from the catchment area there and around . so who is to notice if a group of happy go lucky travelers start to empty whatever liquids they like in the surrounding fields like they have done in surrenden field .
