Number of annual bus journeys rise in Brighton and Hove

People in Brighton and Hove used the bus more than ever last year, according to Brighton and Hove City Council.

And punctuality improved, with 89.4 per cent of buses running on time in 2013-14, up from 88 per cent in the previous year.

The council said: “Passengers made more than 46 million single bus passenger journeys during 2013-14 and bus patronage increased by 3.6 per cent.”

Councillor Ian Davey, the council’s lead member for transport, said: “We have fantastic bus services in the city and the fact that more people are using them and punctuality is improving shows that it really is a convenient and reliable way to travel.

“The council is pleased to support bus travel in various ways, making it a real and practical alternative to the car which in turn helps reduce congestion.”

The council said: “The number of bus journeys made in Brighton and Hove has doubled in 20 years, soaring from 22 million in 1992-93 to 46.37 million in 2013-14.

“The huge popularity of buses in Brighton and Hove reflects successful partnerships between the council and operators.

“The latest figures are compiled from all eight bus operators in the city who are part of a partnership with the council to improve services.

“Brighton and Hove City Council is spending £1.3 million on supported bus services that provide vital links to outlying areas, especially in the evenings and at weekends.

“The council is also improving infrastructure for buses in the city through schemes such as the ‘Better Bus Area’ in Edward Street, new bus lanes in Lewes Road and the Vogue gyratory and is working with Brighton and Hove Bus Company to develop cleaner bus technology to reduce emissions.

“For many years the council has also jointly funded the ‘Breeze Up to the Downs’ bus service with the National Trust and South Downs National Park which connect the city to countryside destinations on the South Downs.”

Prices drop? Private company with little competition and a cash hungry management? Unregulated market? Dream on.

That apart, this is good news. The buses in the city compare with anywhere else in the uk. More low emission buses on the way and the extra revenue should be invested in replacing more of the diesel fleet and contributions to the improving infrastructure.

Problem is Ian that we have a privitised bus service which cannot legally be subsidised outside of London, where bus services are regulated. In much of Europe they have more sense and have not screwed up their public transport systems, though it was more than 1 Euro in the half dozen European cities I have used public transport in the last couple of years.

We had 13 years of Labour government that did nothing about the situation sadly. Hard to see how it will improve.

So the greens in the guise of transport spokesperson HJarrs are saying that all the problems with the cost of bus fares are due to privatisation?

Even though the bus companies must have more than doubled the size of their fleets over the past 20 years as well which they have financed?

And they are running more buses as they must be getting higher revenues to finance the additional vehicles themselves?

And the bus companies do receive subsides in the guise of payments for running off-peak services and the ’20p per tap’ that every concessionary bus ticket user pays?

This is together with all the roads that have been effectively given over to dedicated bus lanes?

And how come that with this the council in their partnership with the bus companies have not considered the fare-paying ratepayers by requiring that they do not increase bus fares every year at above inflation rates, but instead seemingly just giving them ‘free rein’?

And that the requirement for lower emissions is a direct result of allowing more and more buses to squeeze though the centre of Brighton resulting in queues and even more congestion and hence higher emissions? And that this has lead to the forcing of bus companies (except The Big Lemon!) of switching to lower emission vehicles and that this is being passed on to passengers by even higher fares?

And that the bus companies cannot afford to switch to even lower emission (i.e. hybrid) vehicles due to them not being cost-effective unless supported by large subsidies?

Should the council also perhaps look at encouraging bus companies to reduce the number of bus journeys during non-peak periods to reduce emissions when there is no real business need to provide the number of buses based upon passenger numbers?

Should the council look at reducing concessionary bus fares to only outside peaks and then to only a maximum of perhaps 4 journeys per person day – above which the passengers should pay a token 50p per journey?

Buses are a wonderful, albeit old-fashioned, option for getting lots of people travelling at the same time to the same destination. If you have a bus with less than, perhaps, 4 passengers, then the bus is not necessarily the low emission transport of choice – and I see a lot of buses going past the end of my street with only 1 or 2 passengers.

Completely off-topic I know, but did anyone else witness Green councillor Alex Phillips and her boyfriend having a screaming argument with each other at the bus stop at the bottom of Brunswick Place last night (around 8pm)? Lots of folk standing around taking photos with their phones.

Alex Phillips was screaming and swearing like the Liverpool-born ******* that she is, and admirably demonstrating how the Greens are totally unworthy of political power…

No. And to be frank not interested. We all have augments at times. Sometimes in places we’d rather not. That’s just part of being a couple. I may not like their politics but that’s neither here-no-there. I’m sure they’ll sort it out.

Patchy, all you demonstrate is the privitisation has not led to the ending of subsidy, but rather, subsidy is more embedded than ever. But, then I bet you voted for a certain party that introduced this shambles in the first

Now tell us how many of these “single” journeys were made by non paying people over the age of 60 that the local people have to subsidize even if they are well off and still in work?

Clouseau – glad to see the greens showing their typical lack of maturity and responsibility after being in power for over 4 years; achieving little through their policies other than increasing pollution and congestion; and then blaming everyone else for the problems.

What an utterly clueless arrogant party!

Roll on May 2015 when this disastrous green council are purged and the replacement council can get some professional traffic planners involved who can look at dealing with congestion but without following the green socialist eco-activist mantra but instead looking to actually help residents, businesses and visitors.

Patchy, I don’t think you should be lecturing anyone about maturity.

Like many people, you clearly have a problem embracing change to deal with the issues we face. There is no more apace for ever more cars in the city. Time to move on.

Clouseau – so you now call the green actions ‘change’ rather than ‘progress’. Says it all!

I love change and ’embrace it’, but only when moving to improve things for the community. Not the green way by regressing to ‘the old ways’ that idiots such as yourself want us to do.

Please greens – please provide us all with the best ‘change’ of all and go and leave it for ANY other responsible party to take over the mess you’ve created…

You really are a pathetic advert for the charm of the greens.
