Signalling issues bring Brighton mainline to a halt

Train drivers working for Southern have voted overwhelmingly to go on strike in a dispute over pay.

Their union, ASLEF, announced the result yesterday (Wednesday 20 May), rejecting a pay offer from the company.

Today representatives from the union are due to meet bosses from Southern in light of the result of the ballot which was conducted by Electoral Reform Services.

ASLEF said that members were asked two questions concerning the company’s failure to make a satisfactory pay offer.

Are you prepared to take part in a strike?

Yes 762 (91.4 per cent)

No 72 (8.6 per cent)

Are you prepared to take part in industrial action short of a strike?

Yes 793 (95.3 per cent)

No 39 (4.7 per cent)

Turnout was 85.3 per cent.

A 24-hour national rail strike, called by the RMT, TSSA and Unite unions, is due to start at 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday (25 May).

Network Rail plans to go to the High Court in London today (Thursday 21 May) to ask a judge to rule that the strike is illegal.

Action short of a strike, including no overtime, will start at a minute past midnight on Monday for 48 hours.

Greed gone mad – shame on them! Police and nurses get a fraction of their wage and they work tough hours, risk their life and make life or death decisions every day. Enough is enough – why isn’t pain brought to these lowlifes?

Sir, shouldn’t you be calling for better treatment of police and nurses?
