Garden waste collections for just £1 a week

SPONSORED EDITORIAL

Residents across Brighton and Hove can now sign up for a garden waste bin as the council expands its successful garden waste collection scheme.

Since the scheme launched in April, almost 1,300 residents have signed up, paying £52 a year to have garden waste collected from their properties.

To meet the growing demand, the scheme has now been extended to all homes with space to store a bin across the city.

Residents who sign-up will receive a brown garden waste bin and a calendar with collection dates for the year.

The annual subscription starts on the date of the first collection. They will then be able to fill the bin with leaves, twigs, grass, plants, and hedge and tree cuttings ready for collection.

Councillor Gill Mitchell, chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “It’s great news that our green waste collection scheme has been so well received and I am pleased that we can now extend the scheme to many other areas of the city.

“It’s all part of our commitment to provide improved, tailor-made refuse and recycling services, reduce costs and help all our residents recycle more.”

For more information about and to sign-up, go to www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01273 292929.

The council also continues to offer cut price compost bins and food waste digesters. Visit www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/compost to find out more.

Great news but we also desperately need food waste collection so this doesn’t just go into landfill where it generates methane.

I would love the Council to set this up.

Particularly as lots of Brighton homes only have balconies or patios so garden waste collection is less important than food waste collection (veg peelings etc.)

The same service in Birmingham is £35 a year (£33 for early online payment) for 20 collections made fortnightly. Why the difference in the charge?

Don’t bother using the councils expensive garden waste collect. They are useless! Miss bins regularly & you will have to email them to report missed bin. I’ve been waiting 3 weeks for mine to be emptied and it’s not the first time! It happens regularly.
