Hove car dealer to become 11-storey block of flats

Hove car dealer to become 11-storey block of flats

Three blocks of 148 flats in total are planned for the KAP Peugeot car dealership site in Newtown Road in Hove

Almost 150 flats are to be built in place of a Hove car dealer’s premises if newly published plans are approved.

Three blocks of 148 flats in total are planned for the KAP Peugeot car dealership site in Newtown Road in Hove

The plans include three blocks containing a total of 148 flats, with ground floor offices, space for a café and underground parking for 94 cars and more than 200 bicycles.

The proposed buildings, in Newtown Road, Hove, will range from 4 to 11 storeys in height – a reduction from the initial 17-storey proposal shared with neighbours during a consultation.

The plans have been submitted by Tudor Holdings. The company is owned by the Kent-based Furneaux family who also run the KAP Peugeot car dealership which currently occupies the one-acre site.

The flats will be higher than the nearby six-storey Hyde New Homes development, which is being marketed as New Wave.

The Hyde scheme – on the corner of Newtown Road and Goldstone Lane – includes 59 flats and six townhouses as well as basement parking for more than 40 cars.

KAP Motor Group, originally panel-beating business Kent Auto Panels, said that the plans followed “an extensive period of consultation with local residents and stakeholders”.

It said: “These apartments will be a mixture of one, two and three bedrooms and will offer attractive, central living in a highly sustainable location, close to local amenities and transport links.

“This scheme would not only contribute to bringing forward these much-needed homes for private sale but will also provide space for a café and commercial uses.

“The plans have been revised considerably in response to feedback received from local residents, councillors and other stakeholders during the consultation process, not least in the reduction in height from an initial 17 storeys down to 11.

“Through listening to the community, the team has been able to develop a well-thought-out scheme that will deliver investment into this part of Hove and help regenerate its immediate surroundings.

“The proposals are focused around the provision of a large, central, public space which connects three separate blocks.

“The space is intended to be multi-functional and could act as a destination as well as providing the means to connect to potential future developments north of the site.”

The site is in the area being looked at in the round by the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum.

KAP said that the scheme would have a positive impact on the area, adding: “The site, which sits within the Hove Station Development Area of the Brighton and Hove City Plan Part One, forms part of a wider and exciting regeneration of this part of Hove.

“There were some concerns about the height of the building in our earlier proposals. We have taken note of this and have removed six storeys.

Three blocks of 148 flats are planned in Newtown Road, in Hove, on the site of the KAP Peugeot car dealership

“The tallest element will now only be 11 storeys high and the buildings have been oriented with this positioned closest to the industrial and retail units to the north to act as a key feature in this local area.

“This responds to aspirations set out in the early stages of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan.”

Yet another development in an area that would benefit by joined up thinking

Yes, it needs thought as a whole. Meanwhile used-car yards are a waste of space. As I said recently, there is great space to be used for housing instead of automobiles opposite Victoria Park in Portslade. Very convenient for the railway station.

What a sad outcome after so much consultation! Previous designs actually HAD design in them. These chunks are a bizarre comedown from what was previously offered! Its not right and buff brick next door to intense red brick? Come on! That is just stupidly jarring on a street curve that needs continuity of line.

Who forced things down to THIS!?

What is the point of having 148 flat and only 94 car parking spaces.

The fact the site is in walking distance from Hove Station makes it a prime candidate for car-free or partly car-free status with no sreet parking permissions available to residents. The choice is between housing vehicles or housing people – space wise.

140 flats and 90 parking spaces? Where exactly will the rest park?

You don’t need a parking spot if you don’t own a car 😉
