Gym makeover to bring new kit, more space and better toilets

A popular gym is being given a £400,000 makeover, with a promise of new equipment, twice the space and better toilets.

The refurbishment of the gym at Portslade Sports Centre is being funded by Brighton and Hove City Council and Freedom Leisure, with the council making use of payments made by developers.

The council said: “Gym users at Portslade Sports Centre can soon take their workout to a whole new level following an ambitious expansion and refurbishment project.

“The project, which is currently under way, will see the popular gym almost double in size, with upgraded flooring, improved audio, visual and sound systems and a wide range of new equipment. Toilet facilities are also being expanded and improved.

“Funded by Brighton and Hove City Council and Freedom Leisure, the work is being carried out as part of the council’s Sports Facilities Investment Plan which aims to improve sports facilities in the city and provide opportunities for residents to get active.

“Work began early in October, with members currently training in a temporary gym space to continue with their fitness journeys.

“They have also been given full access to all Freedom Leisure sites across the city, providing flexibility and choice while the improvements are under way.

“The new gym is scheduled to open in December ready for those residents wishing to embark on a new health and fitness journey in the new year.”

Labour councillor Alan Robins, the council’s cabinet member for sports, recreation and libraries, said: “This exciting expansion project represents a significant joint investment in health and wellbeing facilities for the Portslade community, providing more space, better equipment and an improved environment for current and potential new members to enjoy.

“It’s another step forward in our commitment to improve sports facilities in the city and provide opportunities for residents to get active.”

Freedom Leisure’s regional manager Chris Ashley said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Brighton and Hove City Council to deliver this fantastic upgrade for our Portslade customers.

“The new and improved gym will create an inspiring space for everyone to enjoy being active, healthy and part of a vibrant leisure community.”
