Hove care home run by BHT Sussex rated outstanding for second time

A care home in Hove, run by BHT Sussex, has been rated outstanding for a second time by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The home, known as Sackville Gardens, is part of the Archway project run by BHT Sussex, providing 24-hour residential care to adults with mental health care and support needs across three properties in Hove.

Fewer than 4 per cent of care homes nationally currently hold the top outstanding rating from the CQC.

The CQC’s deputy director of operations in East Sussex, Amy Jupp, said: “When we inspected Sackville Gardens, we found a service that was exceptional at helping people rebuild their confidence and independence.

“Staff went above and beyond to understand each person’s strengths and goals, then worked creatively to help them achieve these.

“For example, we saw leaders had organised an art exhibition which people helped curate and where they could display their work.

“This had a huge impact on people’s confidence in achieving what mattered to them.

“The service worked very well with healthcare professionals to ensure people got the care and support they needed without barriers.

“All the feedback we received from professionals was overwhelmingly positive, with one saying staff were always quick to respond and alert them to any concerns.

“Staff at Sackville Gardens should be proud of the exceptional care they deliver and for retaining their outstanding rating.

“Other adult social care services should look to this report to see what they can learn when it comes to caring for people in their own homes and supporting them to lead their best lives.”

One client of Sackville Gardens cited in the report said: “For the first time in my life I feel happy and stable. Staff at Sackville do it differently and genuinely care.”

The director of mental health and support services at BHT Sussex, Rachael Kenny, said: “We are delighted that Sackville has been rated outstanding again – the fantastic team at the service work really hard to support the people that live with us to lead their best lives.

“It’s especially welcome as, since our last CQC inspection, we have established our innovative step-down service, helping to support people out of hospital quickly, relieving pressure on NHS frontline services.

“We appreciate our partners in this achievement, our NHS clinical colleagues at Sussex Partnership (NHS Foundation Trust), Brighton and Hove City Council, the central support at BHT Sussex and of course the clients at Sackville whose resilience and hope in the face of the challenges that mental ill health can bring is inspiring every day.”

The full report is available to read on the Care Quality Commission website.
