HSBC is closing its branch at Sussex University this week just weeks before the autumn term is due to start.
Sussex University said: “As the closure approaches of the HSBC bank at Bramber House, the university is exploring whether additional cash dispensers can be provided on campus.
“The campus branch of the HSBC will close its doors for the last time on (Friday) 30 August because HSBC has exercised its right to cease service operations before the end of its lease.
“HSBC’s nearest branch will then be at Fiveways, in Ditchling Road, Brighton.
“This brings to an end a relationship that started in 1976 with the Midland Bank, before it became part of HSBC.
“Two cashpoint machines, for use by customers of most banks and building societies, continue to be available on campus at the Sussex House branch of Barclays Bank.”
The university said that it would closely monitor the effect of the HSBC branch closure on the student and staff community at the Falmer campus.
And it was now reviewing banking arrangements across the campus, in particular, whether there were enough cash machines.
Charles Dudley, director of residential, sport and trading services, said: “The continuing availability of cash dispensers and banking services on campus is very important to students, staff and visitors and we will be coming forward with proposals as quickly as possible.”
