A 47-year-old woman is being treated for a serious head injury after a cyclist collided with her on a pelican crossing in Brighton yesterday morning (Tuesday 8 January).

The accident happened just after 9am in Dyke Road, near Queen Square.

The woman, from Maresfield in East Sussex, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with a suspected fractured skull.

She was transferred to Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath where her condition was described as stable but poorly.

The cyclist, a 38-year-old man from Brighton, suffered minor injuries but did not need hospital treatment.

Sussex Police asked anyone who saw the accident to call 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

Was she wearing a helmet? Sorry if you think this tasteless, but had the cyclist suffered a head injury in collision with a car the story would have mentioned if he was not wearing one.

Terrible for both people involved. But before anyone jumps to conclusions and starts ranting, please note there is no statement either way as to who was ‘in the wrong’ here. The cyclist might have failed to stop, or the pedestrian might have walked out in front of him without looking / giving him time to stop.

At Transport Committee next week the question of reviewing these pelican crossings comes up for response to the epetition raised against them. Was this bizarre new way of signalling pedestrian crossings to blame. Did a pedestrian end up in this state because of this new system replacing the green man opposite?
