A club has been formed to bring back an ice skating rink to Brighton or Sussex after thousands joined Facebook groups with the same aim.

The Sussex Ice Skating Club is trying to get financial backing for a new ice rink similar to the one which once operated in Queen’s Square, which closed in 2003.

The site has since been sold by Brighton and Hove City Council to developer who plans to build a hotel there.

Abi Feldwicke said: “Having meet through the Facebook groups Bring Back Sussex Ice Rink‘ and ‘New Sussex Ice Rink in Sussex, we felt it was time to combine our efforts to try and secure a permanent ice rink somewhere in Sussex.

“We will be aranging lots of activities including trips to various ice rinks to get the people of Sussex skating again, and to prove our need for a permanent rink.”

The meeting will be held at 7pm at the Ladies Mile Pub, Patcham, Brighton. Its first task is to form a committee, and volunteers are being sought for chair, deputy chair, secretary, treasurer and marketing officer, legal advisor and fundraising co-ordinator.

If you have the right skills and are interested in getting involved, please email sussexiceskatingclub@hotmail.co.uk. More information will be published at http://sussexiceskatingclub.webeden.co.uk.
