Sussex University has risen up a popular university ranking guide to its highest position.

The Guardian University Guide rates Sussex as Britain’s 11th best university – up from 15th last year.

The league table, published today (Tuesday 17 May), also rates Brighton University 73rd – up from 78th – out of 119 institutions.

Sussex University had the highest placing of any university in the South East outside London and secured high-ranking positions across all subject areas.

Eight subjects are listed in The Guardian’s top ten subject lists. They are

  • physics (7th)
  • media and film (8th)
  • English (8th)
  • mechanical engineering, (10th)
  • computer sciences (9th)
  • biosciences (8th)
  • anatomy and physiology (6th)
  • American studies (6th)

Eleven other subjects taught at the Falmer campus are listed as among the top 20.

Professor Michael Farthing, Sussex vice-chancellor, said: “It is gratifying to see our ambitions for Sussex converted into this latest – and highest ever – Guardian ranking, particularly as this has been achieved during challenging times for us all in the higher education sector.

“Our efforts to add real quality to the student experience are reflected in this ranking, which places emphasis on student satisfaction.

“But I believe we can – and will – continue to improve across the board in terms of research excellence, financial support for students, graduate employment prospects and quality of facilities.”

Sussex was ranked 19th in the recently released Independent Complete University Guide and is currently rated 21st in The Times Good University Guide and 8th in Britain in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
