Man ‘slits his wrists’ in busy Brighton street

A man has reportedly slit his wrists in the middle of a busy street after being stopped by police this lunchtime.

Oxford Street incident

Horrified onlookers saw the man being approached by officers in Oxford Street, off London Road, then kneeling on the pavement and cutting himself with a knife.

Police officers showed the man a Taser, at which point he dropped the knife. The area is currently cordoned off while police and ambulance crews deal with the incident.

One passer-by said: “The guy was stopped by police and just after they stopped him he dropped to the ground and slit his wrists

“There’s blood all over the pavement. The whole road is still shut up with police vans and tape everywhere.”

A police spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of a man with a knife in Ditchling Road, Brighton, at about 1.15pm today (Thursday 21 July).

“Armed officers arrived at the scene within minutes and a Taser was drawn, at which point the suspect dropped the knife. The Taser was not deployed.

“The road was temporarily closed while officers were in attendance and the scene was made safe.

“A 35-year-old year man from Brighton has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and is being transferred to hospital with knife wounds, which are believed to be self-inflicted.

“The matter was dealt with swiftly and no other members of the public were harmed.”

That area seems to get a lot of anti-social behaviour, in fact in the last couple of years it’s just getting worse and worse. The regeneration of the area isn’t working, something needs to change.
I hope the guy in the story gets the mental health treatment he obvs needs, but with massive cuts to our NHS it’s not a certainty he’ll even get a referral.
