Diverted bus knocks over two bollards trying to escape narrow streets

WITH VIDEO: A Brighton bus driver who missed road closed signs ended up taking chunks out of his bus and knocking over two bollards in an attempt to get back en route.

The driver turned off the seafront into Preston Street on Sunday afternoon – but as he drove up, he soon realised the top of the road was closed for roadworks.

He tried to turn around by turning off into Stone Street then into Castle Street. But when he tried to turn back down Preston Street, disaster struck.

Marie Sansom, communications manager for Brighton and Hove Buses said: “The bus was travelling along the A259 Coast Road on route 77 to Devils Dyke on Sunday April 28 at around 14.28.

“The bus turned up Preston Street, which was closed due to water works at the top of the street, before driving down Stone Street and following Castle St to the end.

“As the bus tried to turn left down Preston Street it hit two concrete bollards.

“We are currently conducting a full internal investigation of the incident with the help of our driver and Sussex Police.”

There is also a yellow ‘diversion’ sign with an arrow pointing into Regency Square; that damage wouldn’t have occurred if he had followed that instruction as we frequently have coaches travelling through Regency Square.

This bus driver has ignored the ‘advance warning signs’ before the entry junction. He then ignored the large ‘ROAD CLOSED’ SIGNS at the immediate entrance to Preston Street. He then also ignored the large yellow ‘DIVERSION’ sign leading from Preston Steet to Regency Square. He also failed to see the large red ‘ROAD CLOSED’ which is clearly seen a fair distance away.

I am baffled as to how this incident occurred considering the route ‘opt out’ alternatives which were clearly signposted!

Perhaps he thought the signs had been put up by mistake….

Perhaps the driver needs to go to Specsavers?
