The Martlets has started its annual “Light up a Life” appeal to give families and friends a chance to remember loved ones and raise money for the hospice.

The charity said: “Martlets is inviting people across Brighton and Hove to join them at a series of ‘Light up a Life’ events to remember their loved ones this Christmas.

“Two events will take place at the Martlets Hospice building in Hove on Sunday 1 December and Sunday 8 December at 4pm with a further service in the community at St Nicholas Church, Saltdean on (Wednesday) 11 December at 7pm.

“Each Christmas, Martlets hosts ‘Light up a Life’ services to provide families and friends the chance to celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

“Everyone is welcome to the events, whether they are directly connected with Martlets or are looking to find comfort from joining others who have been through a similar experience of loss and bereavement, especially at this time of year.

“‘Light up a Life’ is a chance to make a donation to dedicate a light and help Martlets to continue to provide free care for local people who are coming to terms with the impact of a life-limiting illness, either for themselves or someone they love.”

Emily Brown, Martlets supporter engagement manager, said: “‘Light up a Life’ is a time to reflect and celebrate the lives of people we miss, as we join in with carols and listen to readings.

“We hope that people will join us in remembering their loved ones in whichever way is best for them and help us to keep helping create more treasured memories for local families.”

Rebekah Whiteley will be supporting ‘Light up a Life’ in memory of her mum Elaine who was a Martlets patient this year and said: “It’s so important for us to keep talking about Mum. Creating a Christmas tradition to remember her will really help with that.

“Martlets did so much for Mum and for all of us as a family. They supported us all through a very difficult time which was only made manageable because of the care given by Martlets.

“If you’re thinking of making a donation, even small amounts count as it can be the tiniest details that make a difference to someone’s care.”

‘Light up a Life’ services take place on the following dates and locations

  • Sunday 1 December 2019 4pm Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove
  • Sunday 8 December 2019 4pm Martlets Hospice Wayfield Avenue, Hove
  • Wednesday 11 December 7pm St Nicholas Church, Saltdean Vale, Saltdean
