When will we find out who our new MPs will be?

Brighton and Hove elections 2019 – we’ve got it covered

The times voters in Brighton and Hove will find out who their new – or possibly old – MPs will be has been published, along with all the other UK constituences.

The Press Association (PA) this morning put out a comprehensive list of estimated declaration times, constituency by constituency.

Both Brighton constituences will definitely have a new MP, as Pavilion’s Caroline Lucas has stepped down and Kemptown’s Lloyd Russell-Moyle was unable to stand after an investigation into unspecified allegations was launched days before the deadline for candidates.

However, unless there is a serious upset, Labour’s Peter Kyle is likely to remain as Hove’s MP given the huge swing towards his party nationally.

Labour’s previous lead in Brighton Kemptown will be difficult for any other party to overturn, even after Mr Russell-Moyle’s last-minute suspension angered left-wing party members.

However, the contest is Brighton Pavilion appears to be on a knife-edge, with different polls predicting wins for both Labour’s Tom Gray and the Green’s Sian Berry.

A council by-election is also being held for Brunswick and Adelaide ward, where Labour councillor Jilly Stevens, 75, resigned because of ill health.

Here’s when PA says the city’s general election results are expected to be declared:

    • Brighton Kemptown – 3.45am
    • Brighton Pavilion – 4.30am
    • Hove – 4.45am

The counting of the votes will begin once ballot boxes have arrived at Portslade Sports Centre after 10pm.

Brighton and Hove council has not give an estimate of when the by-election results will be declared, other than to say results for all four are expected between 4am and 7am (which may give a clue as to how optimistic PA’s estimate is).

If you’re intending on following the results at home and want to plan when to take naps, the rest of the list is published below.

PA says all timings are approximate and can be affected by issues such as delays in verifying and counting ballots, or by recounts.

There have been substantial boundary changes at this election and this means there is considerable uncertainty around some of timings below.

The list is arranged by the estimated time of declaration, starting with the earliest.

I’d have thought Kemptown and Peacehaven (to give it its new official name) would be last as it takes longer for some of the ballot boxes to make their way to the count centre plus the complications of needing staff from Lewes to process any postal votes collected on election day.

The by-election shouldn’t slow down the overall count for Hove and Portslade as the different ballot papers can be separated during verification and then counted whenever a count team is available as the overall constituency count can’t start until verification is complete.

I am not sure what we are supposed to be voting for with Peter Kyle except an individual who is a bit better dressed than a Councillor. He hasn’t shown much interest in Hove in a long time and is completely out of touch on the great King Alfred seafront robbery about to happen.
