Deputy PM’s Hove flat graffitied amid tax evasion claims

Graffiti daubed outside the apartment building in Hove where Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner owns a second home - Picture by Gareth Fuller / PA Wire

Graffiti calling Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner a “tax evader” has appeared at her Hove flat.

The word “bitch” along with a much larger sign saying “tax evader!” have been pictured on a white wall on the outside of the property.

Across the road, “Tax evader Rayner” and “Rayner tax avoidance” have been graffitied on construction chipboard.

The graffiti refers to Ms Rayner underpaying stamp duty on a the purchase of the flat for about £800,000 earlier this year, which she admitted yesterday.

PA reports that sources close to Ms Rayner, who is also the Housing Secretary, said she was given three separate pieces of legal advice before buying an £800,000 flat in Hove at the centre of the row.

They said a conveyancer and two experts in trust law had all suggested the amount of stamp duty she paid on the property was correct and she acted on the advice she was given at the time.

Ms Rayner has been under mounting pressure in recent weeks after reports emerged she had saved £40,000 in stamp duty on her East Sussex flat by not paying the higher rate reserved for additional home purchases.

On Wednesday she admitted she had made a “mistake” and referred herself to standards adviser Sir Laurie Magnus after receiving fresh legal advice that she was liable for the extra duty following headlines about the purchase.

A spokesperson for Angela Rayner said vandalism at her Hove flat is “totally unjustifiable and beyond the pale”.

The spokesperson said: “This vandalism to residents’ homes is totally unjustifiable and beyond the pale.

“Neither Angela nor her neighbours deserve to be subjected to harassment and intimidation.

“It will rightly be a matter for the police to take action as they deem appropriate.”

Sir Keir Starmer has condemned vandalism at Angela Rayner’s seaside flat in Hove after she admitted underpaying stamp duty on the property.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Some of you may have seen the photos of the vandalism of the Deputy Prime Minister’s home this morning.

“The Prime Minister condemns this vandalism in the strongest possible terms.

“Whatever scrutiny our parliamentarians may face, it is appalling that their private homes should be targeted in this way.”

There’s no way that this wasn’t pre-meditated, the shear audacity that these parastes have is beyond belief. She has tried to swindle it at the same time they’re trying to wipe out the middle class. Where’s the democracy in this?

I think lizz truss did a blinder on wiping out the middle class personally.

As for the graffiti – usual idiots who need to get a life.

As for Rainer – she should resign.

You condemn Rayner for what *might* be a legitimate mistake, and yet you celebrate Liz Truss ? I suspect that your condemnation might be because of your politic rather than any issue you have with tax avoidance. I somehow suspect that you were not calling for the resignation of Sajid Javid’s intentional tax evasion amounting to *millions of pounds* for over 10 years. Personally, Someone in her position, should not make mistakes, so it is a bit inexcusable, but it is NOTHING like the intentional fraud, embezzlement and corruption or the tory party under Johnson. Covid “fast track” ? Michelle Mone any one ? Literally BILLIONS of pounds or tax payer money embezzled by rich tories and their mates, but I imagine you were fine with that.

You are entitled to your opinion but if you’re unable to back it up with evidence, then it’s about as useful as saying there is a Loch Ness monster.
Have you ever been accused of something and judged before a defense is made.

The irony of cowardly thugs who did this won’t pay to have this cleaned, nor will they stand up and admit to their scumbaggery. They want to have a hard look at their own evasion.

I think they should be commended and not condemned for their graffiti actions. Power to the people.

What a disgraceful, petty act of vandalism. The cleaning bill will be handed to all the leaseholders and the cost of extra security to the taxpayer, (some may say ironically.) These despicable people have no respect to our environment and the only thing they have achieved is that scant resources are further stretched by this mindless crime.

Is it true she used her blind son’s compensation payment to buy this flat? That would be almost as scandalous as going to a top firm of tax evasion specialists to get advice on how to evade the stamp duty.

Elaine, were you never taught the old axiom; “don’t believe everything you read in the papers.” She would be legally barred from using HIS money, it would be a criminal breach of fiduciary trust. You really should think before you repeat scandalous, hurtful gossip only designed to undermine her credibility both as a successful woman in politics and a caring mother and person. Shame on you.

The issue appears to be that thejid house her disabled son is living in is no longer her house, as she put her part of it into a trust for her son when she divorced her husband, and as such it is not really her house, and she does not live there. So when she bought a house for herself, it was NOT a second home, so she paid the usual stamp duty. However, because it is in trust for her son, it is technically still her house (why ? If it is in trust for someone else ?) so she should have paid stamp duty at a higher rate. This sounds like it *might* be a genuine mistake, and is likely why her conveyancers did not pick this up. But really, as someone with such a high profile, it was a bit remiss of her not to make absolutely sure that everything was above board, so perhaps that might be considered a problem. Personally, I would give her the benefit of the doubt, as this is FAR AND AWAY from the MASSIVE, intentional tax fraud from members of the government that was so rife when the tories were in power – Michell Mone, Sajid Javid, Johnson, Sunak’s wife, etc, for all that from the tories was INTENTIONAL and then they tried to justify it all. This was reasonable meagre by comparison, and could have been a genuine mistake.

The “has appeared” in the opening sentence of the article should be “have” as graffiti is plural. One such instance is graffito. Meanwhile they have both been covered and there are copious “caution: wet paint” stickers in their place.

Wow… are you for real? She used tax avoidance measures and got caught. Any of us would be facing large fines and possibly jail time? Why else would you use financial advisors to purchase properties rather than just a chartered surveyor? Shame on you really… she should resign, but this cowardly government have no shame..
Let’s not forget the dodgy sale of her council home last year!…

Wait a minute; forget the tax row, someone spent 800 000 quid on a flat? Why are none of the usual rent-a-gobs on here mentioning that? A single flat? One flat? Listen, they look great on the outside but are absolute dogs inside to maintain. A fool and their money etc…It’s great to see us priced out of our city by such upstanding members of society, though. £800,000. Incredible. Perhaps another MP will spend a million on a bungalow in Peacehaven next to balance things up.

Yeah, and considering that, according to some experts on the radio, Stamp Duty is a specialisation in itself, so it is recommended you see a specialist just on that aspect.

The worst government you’ve ever known? Were you not in the country when the Tories were in charge? Boris had a different scandal every other day, lied about all of them, and then we had more prime ministers than rabbit droppings in a summer meadow. You can’t believe they were any better than the current lot?
