Crash closes A23 on the edge of Brighton just before rush hour

A main road was closed after three people were injured in a car crash involving two cars and a pedestrian this morning (Friday 4 November).

The pedestrian, a woman in her twenties, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, with head injuries.

Two men were also taken to hospital after the accident in Old Shoreham Road, near the corner of Benfield Way, just after 11.30am.

One was the driver of one of the cars and the other was a passenger in the second car. Firefighters cut one of the men free.

The A270 Old Shoreham Road was closed while firefighters, ambulance paramedics and accident investigators worked at the scene.

Queues of traffic built up along Old Shoreham Road and on the A293 link road from the A27 Brighton bypass.

Sussex Police said: “At 11.35am two cars and a woman pedestrian were in collision in the A270 Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, at the junction with Benfield Way.

“The woman, a man driving one of the cars and a man who was a passenger in the other car, sustained injuries.

“The woman was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment.

“No assessments of their conditions have yet been received.”

At lunchtime the force said: “The road was closed in both directions and drivers have been advised to avoid the area for the time being.”

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
