Brighton is one of Britain’s top ten towns and cities for pickpocketing outside London, according to new research.
With 912 cases reported to the police over two years, Brighton was ranked seventh-worst by price comparison website comparethemarket.com.
The website, which specialises in insurance, said that there were 324 cases in 2020.
And this was down from 588 cases in the previous year, based on “freedom of information” requests sent to police forces up and down the country.
Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Bradford, Bristol and Leicester were the six cities ranked worse than Brighton for pickpocketing.
Comparethemarket.com said: “With many people still opting for a staycation versus travelling abroad at the moment, it’s no surprise that search interest continues to rise for holidays in the UK.
“Everyone needs to enjoy some time away should travel restrictions allow.
“However, it’s just as important to stay alert with over 130,000 pickpocketing thefts being reported over 2019 and 2020 in the UK alone.
“New research conducted by comparethemarket.com reveals the top 20 pickpocketing hotspots in the UK including Brighton in seventh position.”
In total 137,666 pickpocketing thefts were reported over the two-year period, with travellers urged to take care to keep their belongings safe during holidays and trips.
