Co-op store to close next month

Morrisons to become anchor store after Meridian Centre revamp

Co-op to sell Meridian Centre as Peacehaven plans new town centre

The Co-op store at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven is to close next month.

A sign at the entrance said that the shop would shut for good on Saturday 20 January.

The closure comes with the Meridian Centre about to undergo an overhaul in a scheme that will, first, involve knocking down the existing buildings.

A new Morrisons supermarket is planned to replace the Co-op, with a number of other shops and a new public library.

Brighton and Hove News first reported the Co-op’s plan to sell the site in May 2020.

And earlier this year, councillors unanimously approved the scheme for a “comprehensive redevelopment” of the shopping centre.

Brighton and Hove News reported in April that Wm Morrison Supermarkets wanted to replace the Meridian Centre with a Morrisons superstore and 10 smaller shops as well as a new library.

The supermarket chain, Britain’s fifth biggest, said that its new branch would create about 190 full and part-time jobs. It said that the Co-op had 46 staff at the site.

The revamp is expected to create 200 other jobs – up from 60 at present – and Morrisins said that the 390 jobs in all would be worth up to £4 million a year in salaries alone.

The company is also looking to add some housing on the eastern edge of the site at a future date.

Great news but hope it ‘s easier to take a buggy in. Not everyone has a car and it should be easier to walk to…and cycle.

As someone who lives in the Brighton half of Saltdean, I’m interested! Peacehaven, including the Meridian Centre, is one of the places I shop, along with Newhaven and, occasionally, the Asda at Brighton Marina.

Peacehaven is within the Brighton Kemptown constituency, so arguably constitutes part of the city.

Being part of the Kemptown Constituency does not make Peacehaven part of the city!

The library is much smaller than what we have at the moment – a real disappointment for East Sussex’s fifth biggest town. It’s not just about books, it’s about internet access, socialising and a warm space for the elderly. ESCC is at fault for once again failing to prioritise the needs of taxpayers.

On a positive note, the underserved community in Newhaven will have more choice closer to hand then the current Sainsburys on offer though Morrisons is one of the most expensive of the big grocers, not best suited to the community I’d have thought

What would be nice if the buses that run up to the meridian centre would include say a 12 service that would then get locals into Seaford for Morrisons or even Sainsbury’s Newhaven ,would increase footfall for the eventual supermarket there and help local residents with mobility issues .Peacehaven needs more shopping as Lewes does seem to keep building new housing without providing the infrastructure to support it
