Hundreds of people could be a step closer to having their roads included in a resident parking scheme which could start operating in the summer or autumn of next year.
A preliminary consultation could begin in the spring in the Nevill area of Hove, three years after some residents called on councillors to act.
In September 2022, they asked Brighton and Hove City Council for parking controls in their streets because they were concerned about road safety for children at nearby primary and secondary schools.
More recently, Conservative councillor Ivan Lyons asked when people living in Nevill Road, Nevill Avenue and the surrounding streets would be consulted about the prospect of having a controlled parking zone.
Gripes include the long-term parking of campervans and large vehicles as well as commuter parking from office workers at Legal and General to passengers using Hove and Aldrington railway stations.
The fed up residents asked if they could join the zone P light-touch scheme which covers the streets from Hove Park to Withdean.
Labour councillor Trevor Muten, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said that he expected a preliminary consultation to be carried out in the spring.
Councillor Muten said: “Officers will analyse the responses and propose a further detailed design consultation which will indicate the parking arrangements and street layout should a scheme be introduced to the area.
“The timescale for introducing controlled parking to an area is approximately 18 months. Therefore any scheme for the area would likely be implemented during summer/autumn of 2027.”
He said that council officials would meet with Westdene and Hove Park ward councillors early in the new year to discuss further details.

Good. It’s impossible to park round here, despite the fact that most houses have off road parking. They should put a few cycle lanes in while they’re at it.
I believe the residents in this area were consulted at the same time the P zone residents were. They should have said yes then instead of moaning ever since.
Of course most of these residents own nice big houses with driveways so they won’t be spending out to park will they. “We don’t want no strangers [parkers] in our town”
Hope they have more than one car ,per household and lots of relations whom visit
Happy New Year. Don’t bother visiting here.
We used to often drive to Brighton. Its over 50 miles by road ,unfortunately public transport from Swanley entails going via London Victoria. The main reason we no longer go is the high cost of parking, I Don know if they use those difficult to use for older folk parking apps. I have cycled there in recent years but a 112mile bike ride gets less appealing at 71 years young.
Another acquisitive move by the council. The parking scam that keeps on giving
Parking schemes are needed pretty much all around Brighton; you can’t leave areas untouched, because free parking seekers are going to be displaced whenever you introduce a scheme. I do think there should be an offer available for commuters, however, which could be a form of park and ride, even including using the train, if that’s what people are using this area for. A practical way to support drivers.
