Pothole-strewn road finally repaired

Pothole-strewn road finally repaired

One of Brighton’s most potholed roads has finally been resurfaced.

The access road through Stanmer Park was closed for five days from 14 October for a wholesale repair.

Specialist contractors dug up the original road before recycling the existing stones and tarmac with a binder as a base and resurfacing using traditional asphalt with a high recycled content.

Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet member for Sport and Recreation, said: “The Stanmer Park access road was in desperate need of repair, so I’m delighted to see that this long-overdue resurfacing has now been completed.

“It’s already making a huge difference for residents and all park users.

“When parking changes were introduced in 2021, a commitment was made for that money to go towards managing, improving and maintaining the park, so it’s great to see this in action.

“Following a hugely successful National Lottery funded renovation project completed last year, it’s great to see Stanmer Park finally has the access road it deserves. It’s the icing on the cake for this much-loved city park.”

The road before resurfacing

The £400,000 rebuilding and resurfacing work has been funded from the council’s capital funds, along with revenue from car parking changes.

How about finishing the job in roads like Hill Drive, where the manhole covers in the road have not been brought up to the new road level after resurfacing. Potholes have effectively been created, some a few inches deep from tarmac road to metal manhole cover.

How about reporting it to the council or your local councillor, instead of stop whining on a local newspaper comment section.

Anyway bravo on finally getting this road done, it really was bad. Actually seeing quite a lot of roads being replaced this year. More need doing but it takes a while to undo the green legacy I guess.

Good comment. We are quick to moan, but slow to do anything proactive about our concerns.

I was reading that the main bottleneck was manpower to do the work rather than funds to pay for it. Sounds like an excellent opportunity for further apprenticeships.

Well Benjamin, I used to report blocked gullies and substantial potholes to the council via their website:
          https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/report-problem-gully-or-drain-street
          https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/travel-transport-and-roads/roads-and-highways/roads-pavements-and-potholes-report-damage

I used to do this with photos and exact locations.

10 years ago things would be fixed. Now nothing happens, so I have basically given up. I can also say categorically that the blocked gullies have not been emptied in at least three years – perhaps longer
I have now changed my car to one more suited to off-roading and have stopped using my bicycle as the wheels kept getting buckled. I am fortunate that the local flooding caused by the blocked gullies has not affected me directly. However as I reported them if I do need to claim compensation (or my insurer could) from the council for negligence that fact I have will add to my case.

I would urge everyone to do the same.

My experience has been completely different Chris, but I have also taken the extra effort to follow up on repairs and will ask my local Councillor to crack the whip as well, but, I think we’d be agreed it shouldn’t require that to get something fixed.

I’d like to see the council take a proactive, rather than reactive approach, to these sorts of things.

At least one, Chris! Always at least one.
