Brighton’s famous shipping container housing scheme has scooped a second award, this time Inside Housing’s innovative development of the year.

Richardson’s Yard, developed by QED and Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), was praised for the scheme’s high quality of refurbishment.

The 36 shipping containers in New England Road are used by BHT to house people with a history of homelessness.

The judging panel said: “The Richardson’s Yard pop up homes were innovative, flexible and replicable.

“Crucially, the containers were refurbished to a high quality, overcoming potential problems to provide an interim solution for vulnerable people in chronic need of affordable housing in Brighton and Hove. Once again, congratulations to all involved.”

Ross Gilbert of QED said: “It is nice to receive the recognition this award brings with it and I would like to say a big thank you to Inside Housing, all the sponsors, the judging panel, Andy Winter and his team at BHT and finally all those at QED where we continue to develop innovative and low cost housing solutions where it is needed most ” .

Andy Winter of BHT said: “Once again Richardson’s Yard has been recognised on a national level for providing an innovative solution for Brighton’s chronic housing crisis.

“I feel it is very important that QED is recognised for having the vision to make this development a reality, and I am delighted that BHT was chosen by QED as its partner.

“Without QED we would have 36 fewer homes in Brighton that are available for rent within the Local Housing Allowance, meaning that they are amongst the most affordable homes in the city.”

Last year, Mr Winter was named inspirational leader at the same awards ceremony.

    Well done to all there.

And it got cross-Party support at the Planning Committee a few years ago. The usual people in readers’ comments sneer-boxed the prospect of it but it has proved to be the force for good that was hoped.

    Would like to know:
How much did it all cost?
    who paid for it?
    How much is the rent?
    Who pays for the rent?
    Who gets the rent monies?
