Brighton students to get a taste of volunteering

University of Brighton students will get the chance to try out a variety of volunteering projects next week as part of the university’s Student Volunteering Week.

Taster sessions will be held on every campus from Monday 24 February to Sunday 2 March.

The aim of the week is to get more students volunteering, as well as showing how volunteering helps build skills for employment and highlighting the role that student volunteers play in their local community.

The week is run by the University of Brighton’s volunteering service, Active Student, which matches students up with volunteering placements in the local community.

Active Student has won awards from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Events during the week include Good Deed Day on Monday 24 February where students will be performing ‘random acts of kindness’ at five of the city’s libraries.

They will also have a chance to play indoor bowls with the residents at the New Larchwood Centre in Coldean and work on allotments and conservation projects at the Moulescoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project.

Last year Active Student supported 365 students to participate in activities in their local community and sourced a further 230 volunteering opportunities for Community Engagement students.

Active Student manager, Beth Thomas-Hancock, said: “Active Student takes an innovative, proactive approach to volunteering and it supports students all the way.

“We are keen to encourage as many students as possible to take part in Student Volunteering Week. Volunteering both helps your local community and can improve your employability.”

For more information about the week, and volunteering opportunities throughout the year, visit the University of Brighton Active Student Volunteering Service website.

The first thing that these students could volunteer to do is to clean up all the junk that they dump outside their houses on a daily basis.

Some student areas in parts of Brighton look like a Mumbai slum
