The Liberal Democrats said that the party had picked its parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown.
Paul Chandler has before twice contested seats in the constituency for a place Brighton and Hove City Council.
Mr Chandler, of Sudeley Street, Kemp Town, stood in East Brighton in May 2011 and in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean four years earlier.
The former travel agent has also previously stood for Parliament for the party in Worcestershire.
The Brighton and Hove Lib Dems said that Mr Chandler had lived in Kemp Town for 12 years.
The party said that in that time he had been an active member of the community and had helped to shape the plans for the new hospital.
During the past three years, Mr Chandler has given his time to the voluntary sector.
After his selection he said: “I am excited and honoured to have a chance to represent the constituency in which I live.
“From Kemp Town in the west to Peacehaven in the east, this constituency consists of varying conditions and people from all walks of life.
“I have explored it on foot and on bicycle and appreciate that there are many and varied responsibilities that face its Member of Parliament.
“I believe I am qualified to do that job and by bringing Liberal Democrat values to the task can live up to the challenges it presents.”
The party said that Mr Chandler, the chairman of Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats, had previously served as a councillor and had stood for Parliament four times.
