Car smashes into Brighton shop

The car crashed into the front of WH Smith this morning

A car has smashed into the front of a shop in London Road, damaging a hire bike stand.

Nobody was seriously injured after the grey Seat Ibiza crashed into WH Smiths, by its cash machine.

Police have made no arrests and no investigation has been launched as a result of the crash.

by 2pm, most of the bike stand was in operation again, although some individual stands are damaged beyond repair.

Emergency services partially closed the road for about an hour. It reopened shortly after 10.20am.

The bike stand, used for Beryl Bikes, was turned on its side from the impact of the crash.

James Williamson from Beryl Bikes said: “We are cooperating with the authorities.

“The stands were suspended following the incident so we could investigate. A few stands have been damaged beyond repair and, unfortunately, have had to be removed.

“However, the majority of the stands are still functioning fine. The hub has been health and safety checked and should now be live again.”

A spokeswoman for WH Smiths said none of its customers or staff were hurt in the crash, and the shop was trading as normal today.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) said: “We were called shortly before 9.20am today to reports of an RTC on London Road, Brighton.

“Ambulance crews attended the scene and one person was assessed at the scene but did not require further hospital treatment.”

Buses were diverted when the road was closed.

⚠️Due to a road traffic collision at the old NatWest building on London Road all Service’ #BH5 #BH5A & #BH5B are on diversion.

“There were no injuries reported and the road has been re-opened. No arrests and no investigation.”

How can you crash there? The traffic is quite slow. Yes should be arrested and charged.

Someone remind me why viaduct road is 1 way and all cross town traffic goes down this side road?

The Greens thought it would be nice to have planting there, slowing down one way traffic, without considering the consequences of the incoming traffic being made to use a crazy and confusing diversion. Another crackpot idea of theirs.

What, no investigation? It is hardly an ordinary, every day occurrence.

Because there is no need to investigate, obviously.
