An eight-week project is to start on the promenade near the Palace Pier, the council said today (Wednesday 5 February).
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Work is due to begin soon on essential strengthening work to the promenade in front of the Palace Pier.
“The work, which will start on Monday 17 February, is expected to take around eight weeks to complete and scheduled to finish before the Easter bank holiday weekend.
“Access to the pier will remain throughout. However, cyclists will be diverted away from the work area.
“The pavement and road in this area is built on top of arches. The strengthening work is needed to protect the arches so they can withstand the weight of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in front of the pier for years to come.
“The work is being done now to avoid the busy summer period.
“Once the work is finished, a temporary surface will be laid before the new junction layout for Valley Gardens is completed in 2026.”
Councillor Trevor Muten, the council’s cabinet member for transport, parking and the public realm, said: “This is important work to strengthen an area that’s used by thousands of residents and visitors every year.
“Doing this essential work now will ensure that it can be finished before the Easter bank holiday weekend.
“While this work is separate to the Valley Gardens improvements, it does mean the area will be ready for when the final phase takes place there next year.”
Then when work starts to rebuild the Royal Albion Hotel, it will all collapse in a heap!

Sounds like an excuse to get rid of one of the oldest roundabouts in the UK and replace it with a less safe T-junction causing forever bottlenecks.
BHCC’s interpretation of “sustainability” is a sick joke. Keeping the traffic moving smoothly and efficiently is the way to reduce air pollution.
The transport department are also killing the local economy by driving visitors and shoppers away from our city in their droves.
I cannot count the number of people swearing they’ll never come back again on various groups and forums.
Brighton and Hove has to be one of the most unwelcoming tourist resorts in the UK.

This story is about the seafront arches which are collapsing due to long term deterioration – where ageing Victorian brickwork is losing is pointing.
The work to repair and strengthen these arches will mean the roads can continue as before, with the weight of modern buses, cars, and lorries.
This work is being funded largely by the Government department of transport a a road repair and an improvement. .
The project has already been detailed as costing us £6million, pay attention.
Not sure where you are getting that figure from – but of course the finance is complicated, because there are several phases of this seafront arch rebuild.
A new funding application is going in to the Department of transport soon, to cover the arches to the west of the rebuilt Shelter Hall – or, ‘phase five’ of the project.
Where the arches support the road the Department of transport provides the majority of the funding. But this sort of long term refurbishment comes under several departments and alternative funding routes. For sure, the council have to match-fund some of it from local incomes.
Must be needed for all that stationary traffic that’s going to be sitting in the congestion caused by VG3 !
If Brighton & hove city council hadn’t wasted 50 million on that ridiculous i360 and spent it on the west pier instead maybe Brighton would still have 2 piers, or spent it on the promenade which would have stopped it falling into the state it is now. It’s the council tax payers of B&H that are going to have to now foot the 50 million bill because of the council’s failure.
Well one can see another major F*** up by the council again.
All these road closures, roads made 1 way or dead ends & no signage. And this so called valley gardens….. Why fix something that is not broken.
All this current congestion is down to the City Council changing the road lay outs…. Stupid.
